Week 7 

We are to research about the urban legend, the story behind it and come up with the narrative structure or simply, a text for the editorial illustration we are going to digitalise on Adobe illustrator later on. We are also required to research about our references and develop our mood boards for the chosen urban legend. Then we are to make a light sketch for the chosen urban legend at the point of climax or turning point.

Week 8

Then, we are to digitalise our sketches in Adobe illustrator and use textures, gradients, etc. The style of illustration has to be art deco and strive for more minimalism.

PROCESS

Urban Legend chosen : Kisaragi Station

In the urban legend named “Kisaragi Station”,  the story of a person calling herself "Hasumi" (葉純) posted on the internet noticeboard, she recounted how she awoke in a train carriage with all other passengers asleep. There were many people claiming they went to Kisaragi station and coming back alive, but she had never come back ever since her last post. 

I started with sketching the ideas that came to mind about "Kisaragi station". How it would look like as a train and how mysterious it would come off as I have to capture the essence of the aura or ambience.

I begin with many sketches to ideally create a message I want to convey to the readers as efficiently as possible so that they could understand and get the message that will be delivered.

Then only after Mr Hafiz's advice and feedback, I started with creating a new sketch from scratch and that would be working towards my final editorial illustration.

Then I started with composing the overall aspect of the foreground, mid-ground and background. The goal is to make it balance as a whole, giving it a perspective to look at while applying the rule-of-third.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Creating art inspired by the urban legend of Kisaragi Station has been a journey into the enigmatic and surreal realms of storytelling. In this exploration, I aimed to capture the essence of whispered tales and eerie whispers that surround this mysterious place.

My artistic vision delves into the depths of the unknown, where reality blurs with myth, and the ordinary becomes tinged with an otherworldly aura. Kisaragi Station, with its haunting tales and spectral whispers, serves as a backdrop for my visual storytelling, allowing me to weave a narrative that teeters on the edge of reality and folklore.

Through my art, I seek to evoke the unsettling and spectral atmosphere of Kisaragi Station, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the chilling ambiguity of urban legends. Each stroke of my brush or pixel on the screen is a deliberate attempt to capture the essence of the unknown, the unexplained, and the whispers that linger in the shadowy corners of our collective imagination.

The eerie silence, the spectral figures, and the haunting aura of Kisaragi Station serve as my muse, fueling my artistic expression. I aim to evoke a sense of curiosity and trepidation in the viewer, inviting them to ponder the mysteries that shroud this legendary place.

In essence, my art seeks to blur the boundaries between reality and myth, inviting the audience to step into a world where the urban legend of Kisaragi Station reigns supreme—a world where the line between truth and fiction is tantalizingly thin, leaving behind an indelible mark on the psyche of those who dare to explore its mysteries.

REFLECTION

During my practice sessions, I've honed my ability to craft and convey design ideas more effectively. I've enhanced my approach by initially seeking manual solutions and seamlessly integrating them into digital techniques with greater efficiency.

Moreover, I've been instructed on leveraging online resources for information and communication, utilizing them to draw inspiration. This has refined my capacity to meticulously select and apply these insights to my projects, resulting in the creation of more profound and resourceful designs.

This process has unleashed my creative thinking, allowing me to delve into fresh, uncharted concepts and amalgamate them into a diverse array of innovative ideas that were previously beyond my grasp. Consequently, I've been motivated to expand my knowledge base, constantly exploring additional design concepts on a daily basis.
