Drawing in chiaroscuro /kɪˌɑːrəˈsk(j)ʊərəʊ/
The lines we draw in an average illustration do not exist in reality, they are only there for us to define on paper the space that the objects take up the lines, for them to occupy. By constantly improving my skills, it will allow me to place every item where and how I want it to be.
💡 Things that I learned:
- Pathfinder
- Shape Builder
- Knife Tool
Applying what we've learnt in Illustrator, there are six blending modes : Normal, Darken, Lighten, Contrast, Inversion, and Component. Each of these modes works slightly a little different, it's important to know which one to use for the desired effect outcome.

SKETCHES

IMPORTANT:
The idea was to achieve an eerie ambience, to encapsulate the beauty of silence. The hands are in a position where it symbolises a cage, for us women. Society’s cage around us. The colour red, symbolising my passion and vigour, becomes emblematic of my unwavering determination to break free from the societal constraints and earn a place on my terms. The phrase "golden light" embodies my ethos, an embodiment of strength that helps me to navigate a world where societal norms often impose limitations on women's aspirations and capabilities.
The concept is women empowerment inside of me, so it was made like a movie poster to express the need for it to be heard globally.
PROCESS
FONT (illustrator):
I started designing the font in illustrator to fit the idea of composition I have in mind, a simple and minimalistic typeface.
Adobe Illustrator to Photoshop
I imported another photo and cropped the hands of this image to apply to my main image. The main image's hands were then discarded and replaced with my other picture's hands.

Date created : 12/12/2023Then I imported the font I made in the module, Typography.

"golden light" was then formed after consultation as it better describes the future ahead of me, the anticipation and tough road ahead I have to face.

Then, I used photoshop to bevel the font to a metallic-like text. The ribbon/thread symbolises "fate" in Chinese mythology, as if it embodies my future and destiny all in one.

REFLECTION
In the Illustration and Visual Narrative module, I learned how drawings and images tell stories. It's not just about drawing; it's about conveying messages through pictures. I discovered that every drawing has a story behind it, whether it's a simple sketch or a detailed illustration.
The module taught me the basics of storytelling through visuals. Understanding how to create characters and scenes helped me express ideas more vividly. Learning about composition and colors showed me how to make drawings more interesting and engaging.
Practical exercises were fun and helpful. Creating my own characters and telling a story with them was exciting. It was like writing a story, but using pictures instead of words. I also experimented with different drawing styles and techniques, which expanded my creativity.
I realised that illustrations have a unique power to evoke emotions and capture attention. They can transport people into different worlds and convey complex ideas in a simple way. As an aspiring artist, this module has given me new tools to express myself creatively.
Overall, this module was fascinating. It taught me how illustrations bring stories to life and how visual storytelling is a powerful communication tool. I'm excited to continue exploring and using illustrations to share stories and ideas in my future work.
