UNSDG Goal: 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institution.
REFERENCES / INSPO / MOODBOARD
Based on Picasso's Guernica in relation with the UNSDG goal 16, justice, peace and strong institutions, I have started to visualise a physical artwork to encapsulate the beauty of peace and hope.
Angels are symbols of Hope, so Archangel "Remiel" was chosen.
Then came the "angel" I visualise to portray:fig 1.1 & 1.2 | Remiel the Angel of Hope & Cubist sculpture
Then sketches were developed with the idea, fusing both organic lines and cubism (from Picasso's Guernica) into the artwork.
MORE INSPO:
Art Deco style
Incorporating elements of Art Deco style into this artwork could infuse the composition with a sense of glamour, sophistication, and geometric elegance. Drawing inspiration from the sleek lines, bold shapes, and intricate patterns characteristic of Art Deco design, the artwork could feature geometric motifs such as chevrons, sunbursts, or stepped forms to frame or embellish the angelic figure.
Additionally, the incorporation of geometric shapes, could further enrich the composition, echoing the organic themes often found in Art Deco design. By blending Cubist-inspired forms with Art Deco motifs, the artwork could achieve a harmonious fusion of modernist innovation and timeless elegance, inviting viewers to embark on a visual journey that transcends both time and space.
SKETCHES
In the initial sketch idea, the central focus is an angelic figure surrounded by a tranquil arrangement of peace plants. The angel, depicted with graceful wings, symbolises hope and guidance amidst adversity. Surrounding the angel, lush peace plants with verdant leaves and delicate white flowers create a sense of tranquility and harmony, reinforcing the theme of peace and renewal. The ethereal angelic presence with the earthly beauty of the peace plants evokes a sense of connection between the spiritual and natural worlds, inviting viewers to reflect on the healing power of peace and the resilience of the human spirit.

Sketch #2
In this sketch concept, the angel is depicted holding a hoop adorned with peace plant, symbolising a gesture of unity and protection. With outstretched wings and a gentle countenance, the angel exudes a sense of grace and serenity, embodying hope and compassion. The hoop, encircled with lush greenery and delicate blooms, serves as a visual representation of harmony and interconnectedness. As the angel cradles the hoop, it conveys a sense of guardianship and nurturing, suggesting a commitment to fostering peace and well-being. This imagery not only evokes a sense of comfort and reassurance but also encourages viewers to embrace unity and cooperation in the pursuit of a more peaceful and harmonious world.

Sketch #3
fig 1.7 | Sketches
In this sketch, the angelic figure, depicted with Cubist-inspired proportions, exudes an aura of serenity and transcendence. I made a clay sculpture to visualise the cubist-inspired artwork even more with hands on experience and feel by physically and visually making the sculpture itself.
Through fragmented geometric shapes and angular lines, the angel's form takes on a dynamic and modern interpretation, yet still retains its timeless sense of grace and beauty. With outstretched wings and a tranquil expression, the angel holds aloft a symbolic hoop, representing unity and protection. The absence of peace plants allows the focus to remain solely on the angelic presence, emphasising its role as a beacon of hope and peace. This fusion of Cubist aesthetics with the traditional symbolism of the angel creates a visually compelling composition that invites viewers to explore the intersection of art, spirituality, and modernity.
fig 1.8 | Sketches
The idea of an angel and dove was to evoke a sense of security and hope for the peace in the world, aligning with the UNSDG goal 16: justice, peace and strong institutions. The movement of the dove is drawn boldly yet elegantly to evoke a sense of beauty in hope, an organic yet bold stroke.

BALANCE, PROPORTIONS & CONTRAST
Proportions
They are drawn in a way to fit the importance of the angel figure as the main subject, making it the focus of the composition of the artwork.
Balance
Balance is then achieved by giving proper portions of the subject to create somewhat harmony between the shapes, to achieve cohesiveness. And I would always say, when there is a push, there is a pull
Contrast
The main subject is the focus and it consists of geometrical/cubism-like body frame as it is contrasting to the organic lines surrounding it.
The dove's movement can be described as old yet organically involved in the elegant curve.

I chose blues, whites, and gold/yellow for the colours of peace to evoke a sense of serenity, purity, and enlightenment. Blue represents calmness, tranquility, and stability, symbolising the peaceful nature of the angelic presence. White signifies purity, innocence, and harmony, reflecting the angel's divine essence and its role as a beacon of hope. Gold/yellow conveys warmth, illumination, and spiritual enlightenment, adding a celestial touch to the composition and highlighting the angel's transcendent qualities.
Together, these colours create a harmonious palette that captures the essence of peace and spirituality, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world of tranquility and serenity.
RATIONALE
In the artwork, the angel of hope, portrayed with elements of Cubism and art deco later on, evokes a sense of dynamic movement and transformation, symbolising resilience and adaptability in the pursuit of justice and peace. Contrasting with this angular representation, the peace dove's form is depicted with flowing lines, embodying grace and fluidity as it navigates through the complexities of conflict and reconciliation. This interplay of styles not only captures the essence of the angel's strength and the dove's gentleness but also enhances the overall visual impact of the artwork. The design principles includes contrast, proportion and balance. Through the fusion of Cubist elements and fluid movement, the artwork encapsulates the complexity and interconnectedness of the human experience, echoing the principles of UNSDG Goal 16 and inspiring viewers to embrace diversity, dialogue, and cooperation for a more peaceful and just world.
FURTHER RESEARCH INSPO
Incorporating Art Deco style and Cubism into this artwork was a deliberate decision inspired by Picasso's "Guernica," aiming to infuse the piece with historical significance and visual impact. By drawing on the fragmented forms of Cubism, the artwork captures the multifaceted nature of conflict and the complex emotions surrounding peace and justice. Additionally, the Art Deco style adds elegance and sophistication while nodding to the era of the UNSDGs' establishment, reinforcing the timeless relevance of the message conveyed. Through this fusion of styles, the artwork pays homage to a renowned masterpiece while engaging viewers in a thought-provoking dialogue about the enduring quest for peace and justice.

REFLECTION
Throughout the Design Principles module, my understanding and application of fundamental design principles have significantly deepened. And by actively engaging with various design concepts such as balance, contrast, rhythm, and proportion, I've honed my ability to incorporate them into my creative endeavours. Through practical exercises and projects, I've gained hands-on experience in applying these principles to my designs, whether it's a sculpture, graphic layout, or digital artwork.
Moreover, the process of organising and synthesising my thoughts and visual outputs into a final blog has been immensely valuable. It has not only allowed me to showcase my work but also provided an opportunity for self-reflection and refinement of my design process. As a result, I've developed a heightened awareness of how design principles influence the effectiveness and impact of my creations, paving the way for continued growth and improvement in my design practice.
