REFLECTION

Observations

Generally in this module, my main objective was to design a functional typeface, and showcase it in a neat and orderly procedure. This is one of the things that struck me most just at the beginning, namely that this task forces one to be very very careful and nothing is left to chance. Each of the letters, curves of the letters, and the space between them had to be as accurate as possible so that the typeface had a unified appearance at the end. It was rather difficult and at the same time educational to be working at this level of consistency with the requisite precision.

 Findings

When designing the typeface, I discovered the need to put the typeface to practical use by using it in several projects. Thus, I could avoid some mistakes that are present at the level of spacing and kerning when using the font in print, Internet media, and other types of media. This testing phase was a very useful aspect since it enabled the typeface to be developed with the objective of being used on all the platforms. Moreover, I understood that individual skills developed in this course include flexibility and ability to improve based on the reaction received, on the other hand, the difficulties revealed themselves in the first steps of the attempt to combine artistry with practicality of a text.

 Conclusions

Thus, the outcome of this project together with the process of working on it can be valued as a rather valuable experience pinpointing the fact that typography requires constant efforts to achieve the adequate balance. It reassured them that playing the Brand Identity Game was accurate and necessitated a design-minded approach to ensure that the company’s identity matched the design and the practical use of it. Through this typeface test media, I ensured that the typeface was properly tested in all the domains to come up with this final work that has a good aesthetic and functional value. As for the outcome of the project, it not only benefits and improves the technical skills, but also increases the understanding of typography as the art and the science.

 Final Thoughts

Thinking of this process, I can admit that I have a lot of achievements and skills that I have learned. Working on this project, I had to take a host of risks, to venture out of my comfort zone, and on top of it make sure I was making the best design decisions possible at each step. In the future, I want to use all these insights on the next projects, improvement never stops and being as precise as possible when it comes to typography. Through this experience I realised the importance of design to me and the drive to make meaningful work.
