RES60604 DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY | April 2024 Semester Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Creative Media Student name: Edita Chew En Thung Student number: 0357357 Lecturer: Dr Yip Jinchi
TASKS 1 & 2: RESEARCH PROPOSAL & CRITICAL REVIEW (Weeks 1-7) | Week | Item | Feedback by lecturer | Action by Student | Week 1 | Module introduction & briefing of all tasks | Good topic to start on, further develop the idea. | I started researching and gathering the necessary info to be able to start on the topic. | Week 2 | PROPOSAL | “This sounds like a hypothesis and can be a research problem. Provide the evidence from your research (journal article) that supports this hypothesis, and then include the citation at the end of the hypothesis.” “Good intro. Continue to build the problem statement by expanding the research problem to include how typography is applied on brands, etc. Then end with describing briefly your approach to this research (what sort of output of design/brand [at least the type of product] you will be focusing on] and the research method. Remember to cite in APA style where the info is taken from other research.” | I changed and provided the article(s) needed to support my hypothesis and built my problem statement further, including the APA citation.
Expanded the research and kept it more focused on the topic. | Week 3 | PROPOSAL | Match the ROs and RQs | Matched the Ros and RQs, and had many options for the lecturer to choose from, then finalized on 3 ROs and RQs. | Week 4 | PROPOSAL | Make sure the APA citation is correct then you’re good to go, refine the problem statement. | I make sure to add the APA citation text at the end of the paragraph that I have referred from and research article. | Week 5 | PROPOSAL + CRITICAL REVIEW | Elaborate more on the summary and details of the 3 articles and explain what is Mixed-method approach. Change Article 3, it’s a website not an article. | I changed the source of the article to write my Critical review about and also conducted in-depth research and critique of all the articles in order to provide more details | Week 6 | CRITICAL REVIEW | weaknesses must be described in the summary, and why and what the “validity of the conclusion” is. Elaborate more on the potential biases Elaborate more on the summary. Write the conclusion to link , including why it is useful for my research. Elaborate on the method of surveys, etc.
| Changed some articles to better fit the critical review, focused more on the methodology and the works of the surveys | Week 7 | CRITICAL REVIEW | | checked for issue, there is none, only volume. added the discussion for jun’s article

TASK 3: RESEARCH DESIGN – PRIMARY DATA (Weeks 6-12) | Week | Item | Feedback by lecturer | Action by Student | Week 9 | PRIMARY DATA | Method is Survey, Instrument is Questionnaire. How is this applicable to your research problem? Why do you need respondents from diverse backgrounds? Justify with support from literature. I would not recommend having only close-ended questions. Open- ended questions allow you more room to understand the sentiments and minds of your respondents, thus enriching your findings. This is especially when you try to understand their perceptions. Some questions need to be reviewed and altered. "what is the impression/what do you gather as the identity of the brand(s)?" (make it like a checkbox/ checklist) Google form/questionnaire questions are to be typed and justified in TASK 3 docs.
