INSTRUCTIONS

fig 1.0 | Module Information Booklet (MIB)

After time exploring media and learning about information design, we will now develop an infographic that presents a series of different processes as visuals rather than text.

PROCESS

These were the posters that I found and presented it to my lecturer to have advice/consult on which to proceed on recreating the infographic poster.

Chosen "Bad" Inforgraphic poster

The BAD in the BAD

I identified all the inconsistencies and bad design sense in the infographic poster and only then I proceeded to initialise the sketching of the poster.

The most important prospect of an infographic is for it to be engaging and informative, when it comes to the ease of reading it.

So for it to be initialised, it has to be about visuals and all the design principles to make it more appealing, because humans are visually conceptive people.

To create the right visual to what's the infographic is about, "Ditch the Plastic" I thought that Plastic and Marine/Aquatic animals should be the main visual.

Initial Sketches:

1st & 2nd sketch
3rd sketch: (chosen)

I chose a plastic bag and a jellyfish (3rd sketch) and as the main visual as it's both of them look similar things and people tend to overlook the fact that it's harming the aquatic creatures/organisms with plastic.

After approval of my lecturer of the sketch, I started by sourcing all the needed visuals and suitable typography to best fit the infographic I am recreating from scratch.

Then, by creating the basic visuals, we could see the overall image coming together. The jellyfish was photoshopped and aligned, and blended into the background seamlessly. Same goes for the plastic, I first photoshopped the plastic properly and in order to get a transparent look, I used Hard light to make it blend just right.

I created them in separate layers and named them accordingly as I will put in in After effects to animate the small animations.

1st Digitalised version:

After feedback from lecturer, I proceeded to add icons and changed the font colour to contribute to the overall likeliness for the reader to be more engaged from reading the infographic.

Then after all of that, I finally imported it to After effects into a composition and the separate layers can be animated as it's own graphic. I used puppet tools and transform on the timeline to quickly make the simple animations and voila! It's done.

FEEDBACK

- Proceed with the sketch and digitalise
- Change the font colour back to white and make the graphics more inner the poster as it'll look more whole and better.

REFLECTION

Findings

Multiple ideation methods became the focus of my exploration during the Information Design module to efficiently present concepts. I used the iterative design process to evaluate various prototype outcomes thus improving my final product through assessment and evaluation. Brainstorming and mind mapping at the beginning of development prove essential to create organised information structures. Through usability testing I learned about important clarity and functionality issues which I would not have discovered before the testing process. These findings helped me achieve better comprehension regarding critical thinking's role in advancing design solution progress.

Observations

I observed that the ongoing evaluation process together with repeated improvements created a major influence on project results. The evaluation process allowed me to observe user patterns through prototype testing and feedback collection which helped me make knowledgeable design choices. Concepts which appeared practical during initial stages needed critical adaptation before obtaining effective real-time usability and audience engagement. Evaluation techniques enabled me to recognise the essential parts of visual hierarchy and information flow which led to my understanding that adaptation along with critical design approach matters most.

Conclusion

The current module has broadened my understanding about how critical thinking abilities must be embedded in design processes. Using the chosen strategies to generate ideas resulted in structured user-based solutions. The repetitive assessment process together with evaluation work showcased its worth for refining my last design and making it perform effectively. I will apply the skills learned to develop more effective designs which meet my client's requirements. I now understand better as a result of this experience how design works through systematic iteration because every design project needs continuous assessment followed by enhancement.
