REFLECTION

During this project, I had the opportunity to be a group leader and to oversee the general working processes. My role was to facilitate discussions, assign tasks based on the strength of each of the members and to keep the course of our project within the brief. I also organized the proposal, established what we were going to achieve and overall project brief, wrote the project overview, and supervised the process of creating the contents and design of the art guide. As the project was going, I would frequently review the work of everyone and provide definite deadlines to assist the team to maintain a time schedule.

My understanding of the equilibrium between leadership and collaboration was improved thanks to this project. I also got to know that one can provide clear instructions but still leave room to be creative and hence keep the group motivated and productive. Another learning point was on scheduling, where multiple tasks were to be coordinated at various stages and this called upon regular communication and follow-up. Regarding innovative decision-making, I learned the significance of matching the images, ideas, and the user experience at the very beginning to give the whole project a unified feeling.

The manner in which I allocated and coordinated activities worked well. The division of the project into smaller parts enabled each one of us to concentrate on our area of excellence hence the quality and efficiency of our work was enhanced. A well-organized proposal and timeline also assisted the group to be grounded and on track. Taking the lead and clarifying the project direction helped to maintain sanity and make progress with one head and one vision.

Managing various work speeds in the team was one of the major challenges that I had to handle. This was sometimes stalling some sections of the project as some of the members were not so sure of their next steps or had to be guided more. The difficulty of having to work creatively on my own and manage the whole project also put a strain on me particularly when I had several things to do simultaneously.

To eliminate these problems, I would make our instructions more comprehensive and make sure that everybody knew what to do next. I also made more definite deadlines and checked more often to ensure that no one was lost. Under the circumstances when the workload was overwhelming, I rearranged the tasks priorities and paid attention to the areas, which would have a greater impact on the remainder of the project. This contributed towards stabilizing our progress and minimized the last minute stress.

Another aspect that I would like to work with in the next project is time management, which I would further refine by creating checkpoints earlier and putting buffer time on the schedule. I also wish that more active communication should be used in the group as, in this way, I will not have to do all of the coordination myself. I also would like to perfect the process of making creative decisions, which will enable me to direct the art direction more effectively and with more confidence.
