PROCESS

Week 1

During Lecture, we were briefed and encouraged on exploring our previous works in our respective Degree specialisations and analyse our works and where is it revolving around, where does it lean to and does it fit the requirements out there in the industry. Thoroughly think or rethink our current portfolio and if there are areas for improvement. Diving deeper into our specialisation or taking a wider approach on learning new useful skills that potentially increase your value as a person in the industry.

Doing something new and acquiring the necessary skillset to widen my value to be a generalist, or become a specialist where I hone the thing/skill I'm good at.

These are the notes I took from my lecturer's class. I found it aligned to what I've learnt about the industry over the years, but I also found that my findings could be relevant on exploring deeper and meaningful passion or outlook I have for my future/passion/career/skill asset, etc.

After understanding the approach my lecturer gave, here's my input...

To be frank, I learnt about the Japanese value "ikigai" along my studies and work life. This belief/value means "a reason being" or even "a reason to live". It gives purpose, value and joy to life.

I always had the passion for arts/design, I strive for what I'm potentially good at and try to hone them better to be at least good at it. Pursuing a career/profession with my passion with a mission and vocation on what the world needs is part of the journey of my self realisation about life in general.

Graphic Design professions are usually needed for Publications, Visuals, Branding, Identity and Understanding the emotion it evokes in consumers or potential customers on how they experience it or perceive anything using a medium, which is Design.

Jobs could include Junior Designers, Art Directors, Publication Designer, Visual Designer, Content Creator, Social Media Specialist, Identity Designer, Logo Designer, Illustrator, Editorial Designer, Multimedia Designer, Environmental Designer, etc.

Junior Designers, Art Directors, Publication Designer, Visual Designer, Content Creator, Social Media Specialist, Identity Designer, Editorial Designer
These are the most common.

Our job is to make media/designs easy digestable and with meaningful understanding.

Me? My works consists of Visuals, branding, Logos, Content Creation and Publishing.
The emotions I convey throughout my works so far was leaning towards finding and expressing self.

I also realised my works leaned more on Content Creation, and also knowing I enjoy making content, I'm generally decent in creating content, but not like those giant content creators or social media specialists out there with massive experience and followers. But I stood my ground to learn more.

Then, I stood by my decision on going Deep, instead of wide, as widening my skillset will potentially have more jobs that are underpaying and expect more. Honing my skill will have a certain expectation on base salary as you have mastered the skill that is useful.

PROPOSAL

I started crafting my proposal based on my experience on Social Media. Basing it off with Aerii, I decided to Roll out Aerii's first Digital campaign as it aligns to the module.

Aerii is a relatively new skincare brand that's the USP is anti-pollution and microbiome skincare that's first in Malaysia's market.

As it's in its developing phase, it needs awareness and educate the audience while gaining a genuine audience, hence, a content campaign was a good fit.

Proposal Deck:

Week 2

Consulting with the lecturer after deciding on the topic and how am I going to go about the project, and propose that said idea/project. After given the green card to proceed, I began listing things that need to be done and how am I going to do it.

Week 3

I showed my progress to my lecturer to consult about my next moves and action. I tweaked my deliverables slightly to meet the demand and have a more polished outcome.
After enquiring about display stands and props for the brand to make content out of, I'll likely hear about my enquiry at a later date after our lecturer's contact responds.

Week 4

Progress was shown in Teams, online. I updated the project management document and finished the first 2 posts of the campaign and still continuing the progress for the 3rd. I changed some content plans as they are hard to execute with the budget in hand, so I put off the idea for another campaign next time. I replaced it with easier to execute content and will continue updating the content planning sheet as time goes by, but will not change plans after Week 5.

Week 5

N/A (Deepavali holiday)

Continued developing the content planning sheet and changed some contents.

Worked on polishing and adding some content and hope to have a solid base of the content planning sheet.

Booked studios and pods to film content in November (Pharmacist reels) [awareness]

Week 6

Continued developing the content planning sheet and changed some contents.

Designing the posts and planning the reels.
Designing the newspaper ad Design for the upcoming contents.

I also worked on starting the content calendar and organising it.

Packaging design file was sent to printing. Special paper materials were ordered and directly sent to Printing company.

Week 7

Collected the poster/newspaper (to be used in reels as prop) from different printing shop right before class.

After showing progress to sir, I continued with rearranging some of the content and posted the content(s) that were arranged for this week.

Week 8

I collected the packaging for aerii and can start on the filming the frosted photoshoot.
After week 8 consultation, sir said consistency is a must for social media and I will keep in mind.

Week 9

Launched product on shopee, and automated the most recent reel to have comments and auto message to the commenters.

After consultation, lecturer advised me to create a campaign board compilation for the final outcome and deliverables.

Week 10

After consultation, the final compilation has to be in a deck for the social media.

Sir advised to clip the videos even shorter for hooking the audience better.

Started working on the Campaign Deck.

Week 11

Edited the deck and on to the community posts. I aimed for a founder driven brand where the face of the brand would grow the engagement even more, but for the route of the founder driven brand, Sir recommended me to use my personal account and collaborate with the brand so that it reaches more people and as a separate entity.

Week 12

Working on the 2 more posts for community phase, then finalise the campaign deck.

Posted 1 & 2, now left with 3rd, then I can finalise the slides.

Week 13

Finalised and filmed the remaining videos and posted. Screenshot and recorded the insights for the social media and updated the deck while the e-portfolio is constantly being updated.

REFLECTION

Findings

The main conclusion of this module is my discovery that there is hardly ever a linear process that will lead to effective solutions to complex design problems, but instead the intensive and meticulously repeated application of design thinking. Through my involvement in the requirements of the creative media industry, I realized that I needed to go beyond the superficial aesthetics and accentuate the functional problem-solving competencies. I learned that the ability to convert complex problems into simple and manageable ones enabled me to experiment with various hypotheses and improve my answers. This critical analysis demonstration is a good indication that effective design exploration is not merely a matter of creativity, but disciplined seeking of solutions to intricate limitations.

Observations

as far as my personal development is concerned, I noted that the skill to drive and control my own learning journey was the most important in my development. I observed that going by the given materials was not enough, but I needed to take the initiative to audit my personal lapses in learning and to find materials to learn. This continuous self-reflection and self-assessment cycle helped me to trace my progress more precisely than in the past. I noted that this change to self-directed learning is not only a short-term study practice, but a basic value to a lifetime of professional growth in a fast-evolving industry.

Conclusion

Overall, the present module showed that professional design practice needs the high degree of self-awareness and emotional control. The stressful conditions of environment, in which the design exploration thrived, were usually very high-pressure but I understood that the level of being resilient and control my emotional state were the most important aspects of staying productive. Through self-control when faced with tight deadlines or when my creativity failed me, I managed to turn pressure into concentration instead of panic. Finally, I have come to the conclusion that the technical skills are relevant but the ability to recover and keep calm is really the aspect that characterises an efficient designer in this profession.
